Needlework Frames

Frames are used to hold the ground fabric taut so the cross-stitcher, embroiderer or needlepointer can concentrate on the task at hand. Small projects may not necessarily need a frame, but a frame helps to make the work easier to handle and quicker to stitch. It also helps to
hold the fabric permanently taut and evenly stretched to ensure even stitches. Your work stays cleaner with a frame because it is handled less. Also, a frame on a stand allows your hands to be free to work the stitches. Two basic types of frames are round (hoop frame) and straight sided.

The hoop frame is most popular because it is portable, lightweight, and easy to mount. It can be made of wood, plastic, or metal, and it ranges in sizes from 5 to 10 inches in diameter. The frame is composed of two hoops that are placed one inside the other, stretching the fabric between them. The outer hoop has an opening in it and a screw
to adjust the tension. The straight-sided frame (also known as a stretcher frame) has a roller top and bottom and is usually used for larger wall hangings, but is suitable for all types of embroidery.

A straight frame stretches the fabric very evenly and allows for a large part of the work to be visible (good for freehand design). Although more time is needed to mount a piece on a straight-sided frame, the piece is quickly moved into a new position as your stitching progresses.

The latest Q-snap frames are made of PVC pipe. Not only are they inexpensive, available in many sizes, and a "snap" to use, but they
also provide excellent tension and do not crease the fabric—which is the chief draw back of hoops. For many people, Q-snap frames have replaced roller frames because there is no tedious mounting process. They work well for small and medium-size projects.

Both types of frames are available as floor or lap stands, which allow both hands to be free. The hoop frame is easily portable and are ideal when stitching small projects on the go. At home, many prefer frames on stands for larger projects, such as a wall hanging. The stand is always set up, and you can work your project at different
times throughout the day.
