Needlepoint Yarn

Heirloom needlepoint projects use specific needlepoint wool yarn that comes in three weights: crewel, tapestry and Persian.  Most of the fine needlepoint yarns are colorfast, durable and available in hundreds of gorgeous shades.  Here is a brief description of each:

• Crewel wool is the finest of wool needlepoint yarn, a little finer than Persian yarn.  It can be worked in a single strand on a very fine mesh canvas, or two, three or four strands can be combined for a coarser look.
• Persian wool is made up of three easily divided stands.  These strands can be separated to suit the gauge of your canvas.
• Tapestry wool is a single-strand yarn, a bit finer 5than three strands of Persian wool.  It is usually used with medium-gauge canvas.
• Rug yarn is very thick, long-lasting, single-strand yarn.

In addition to wool, all types of needlepoint yarn is available in acrylic which is less expensive and easier to wash but not as handsome for heirloom projects.
