Embroidery Thread and Floss

Embrodiery threads come in an exciting range of colors and fibers. Some popular fibers used for threads are silks, cottons, linens, wools, metals, and synthetics. Particular weights and
thickness of threads are suited for certain types of background fabrics. You can also
experiment with other yarns, such as those made for knitting or crochet. Familiarize
yourself with the following embroidery threads and examples of backgrounds that can
be used with each:

Embroidery floss. A loosely twisted six-strand cotton thread that is easily divided into single threads. Works well on linen or cotton fabrics.

Matte embroidery thread. A thick, soft, tightly twisted thread. Works well on evenweave fabrics in linen and cotton.

Crewel yam. A fine two-ply wool or acrylic yarn. Works well on linen.

Flower thread. A fine thread that cannot be divided and has a matte finish. Works well on tightly woven fabrics and cottons and linens.

Pearl cotton. A strong, twisted thread that catfnot be divided and has a high sheen. Works well on cottons, linens, and wools.

Persian yam. Loosely twisted three- strand wool or acrylic yarn that is easily divided. Works well on cottons, wools, and linens.
