Cross Stitch Floss and Embroidery Thread

Cross stitch floss comes in a variety of different types of suitable  threads.  Most  cross stitch floss is equality suitable for embroidery projects.  Although stranded cotton is seen as the standard, other threads can be used with equal success, including flower thread, cotton pearl, tapestry wool, crewel wool and even some new metallic’s.   Below is a brief description of each type of floss.  Also keep in mind that manufacturers such as DMC and Anchor are always introducing new threads to these main categories providing you with more excitement and creative interest to your cross stitch projects. Finally, these threads are available per skein (quantity of thread varies with type and price) and increasingly in thread packs.

• Cotton Stranded Embroidery Floss. This is 100% cotton floss composed of six easily separable threads and available in hundreds of colors.  The number of strands used differs according to the fabric used.  Strand cotton floss can be used in traditional embroidery as well as for counted cross stitch projects.
• Metallic and other Special Effect Stranded Floss. This is a synthetic thread which looks metallic and can add gorgeous effective to your cross stitch project. Like stranded cotton, metallic stranded floss is composed of 6 easily separable strands.  The number of strands used differs according to the fabric used.  Metallic floss is available in limited colors.
• Pearl Cotton Floss. This is a very shinny (highly mercerized) thread made of 100% cotton, has vibrant color and is tightly twisted. Pearl floss is usually sold in several thicknesses varying from size 3, size 5, size 8 and size 12.  Unlike stranded cotton, pearl floss cannot be separated into strands.
