Most cross stitch designs are embroidered on evenweave fabrics. Evenweave fabrics have an even number of warp (vertical) threads and weft (horizontal) threads. The number of threads in each 2.5 centimeters is known as the count. Finer cross stitch fabrics have a higher thread count. There are two types of evenweave fabrics: those woven into blocks with clearly defines holes and those made with a simple plain weave.
Binca, Aida and Hardanger all belong to the first group. Aida is probably the most widely used fabric for cross stitching as it is easy to work with and comes in a wide variety of counts, colors and finishes.
