Counted stitches are one of hundreds of embroidery stitches. The most famous of the counted stitch embroidery family is the cross stitch. This is a very old embroidery stitch and its derivatives help to develop the qualities of precision and patience in beginning embroiderers.
Most cross stitch projects are embroidered on simple fabrics with an obvious weave so you can count the number of threads in the weave of the material. The cross stitch designs are presented in graphed form. The symbol or spot of color filling each square on the cross stitch chart corresponds to one embroidery stitch. These details generally allow you to make only geometric designs. However, when the stitch is adapted to finer fabrics, more complex cross stitch patterns maybe created.
Counted cross stitch requires using a needle with a blunt tip (tapestry needle) which will not catch the cross stitch fabric but will pass through it between the threads of the weave. These details make counted cross stitch a homogenous, harmonious and relaxing embroidery craft.
